I am a grand daughter of Reggie and Renee Lau. I am proud to have them as my grandparents! Without my grandpa bringing my grandma here I would not exist. I want everyone to know that my grandpa was the most loving, kind, generous grandpa any child could have. He took care of me on most weekends while I grew up. He even would take me to work with him at Hilo Dry Goods. He NEVER raised his voice or his hand at me ever. He spoiled us like crazy, he smiled, laughed, and even played with us. He was a great person and took very good care of my grandma. We lived next door. I believe he tried to give Bernard the best life he could, the only way he knew how. We all need to understand that things were very different at that time. It sounds to me like he only wanted to better Bernard's life. Bernard has the life he has now because my grandpa willingly brought him to America. It really hurts my heart to know that this book was published after the death of my grandparents. I don't want anyone that reads this book to think that my grandpa was a horrible person like he was made out to be. My grandpa did say right before he passed that the day Bernard looked him straight in the eye and said you are not my father was the day he stopped treating him like he was. He did so much for that little boy, it must have hurt him so much to hear those words.

Born in occupied France during WWII and brought up in Hawaii; Bernard Lau was one of the first non-Japanese practitioners of aikido. After a long stint in the navy as a submariner and diver, Lau joined the Seattle police department and eventually wound up as an undercover narcotics agent. This is the story of the off-beat and action-filled life that he had planned for himself at the age of 16, a life that didn't always go according to plan.
