Becoming Visionary: Brian De Palma's Cinematic Education of the Senses (Cultural Memory in the Present)

Though increasing in number (largely thanks to the work of Stanley Cavell, one of the key influences on this new book), legitimately philosophical accounts of film can be hard to come by, and many of those which are available offer either reductive flavors of 'philosophy' or tout the depth of particular films while giving short shrift to the philosophical issues they supposedly address. Against this backdrop, Eyal Peretz, who received a PhD in Comparative Literature from Yale and who is currently teaching at the University of Indiana, has set out for himself the ambitious task of studying a set of films (those of Brian De Palma) while simultaneously remaining soberly philosophical and rigorously attentive to the spirit of the films themselves. This is no simple task, yet Eyal Peretz's 'Becoming Visionary' is, in a single word, a triumph.
'Becoming Visionary' showcases in-depth readings of four particular De Palma films - the horror classic 'Carrie', the Antonioni-homage/thriller 'Blow-Out', the Kirk Douglas sci-fi family drama 'The Fury', and the recent neo-noir 'Femme Fatale' - and relates each of these to specific philosophical and theoretical concerns, including the notion of contingency, the sensation of horror, the relation of visual perception to meaning, and the role of paranoia and visions of false causality in creating narrative. Each of these readings is focused and nuanced, and all give considerable support to Peretz's designation of De Palma as an auteur uniquely sensitive to the uncanny dimensions of his medium. Whereas some might initially dismiss De Palma's work as B-grade or somehow undeserving of thoughtful attention, for Peretz, De Palma's films offer virgin ground for critical inquiry, and enter into philosophical dialogue on equal footing with blue-chip directors like Hitchchock. It is to Peretz's credit that, after reading 'Becoming Visionary', one can only agree with him.
Yet much more is it stake in 'Becoming Visionary' than a reading of a specific set of films, or even an elevation of De Palma's work to a new plane of artistic legitimacy. Peretz instead sets out to create a novel and systematic engagement with the philosophical relevance of cinema itself. Neither philosophy nor film studies suffers in this project: moments like Peretz's synopsis, early on, of the Platonic problematic of ideality versus representation are as lucid and insightful as his survey and critique of different Film Studies accounts of the suture and the frame. At both of these points in particular, a handful of Peretz's pages provides an incredibly sophisticated, clear, and fair take on topics that present several book-length 'introductions' (which you'll find separately shelved under 'Film' and 'Philosophy') a serious one-up in terms of impact, clarity, and analysis. This knack for consistent clarity and precision coexists in 'Becoming Visionary' with an earnest refusal to sidestep complex issues, or to tone down challenging points in Peretz's own analysis. Peretz's willingness to problematize and render more complex the models he suggests - by regularly engaging the idea of a division within the seeing eye, of competing conceptions of the frame, and so forth - is truly impressive, and contributes to construction of a remarkably comprehensive account of film, one that stands solidly alongside the conceptual edifices of Deleuze or Cavell, and which retains a pedagogical forcefulness all its own.
Hopefully, the discussion around 'Becoming Visionary' is just beginning. Peretz's book contains many things - a much-needed scholarly appraisal of a filmmaker often neglected by academics, thoughtful rejoinders and additions to several heated questions in modern film criticism, and a set of elegant reflections that draw in equal parts on Plato, Deleuze, Lacan, and Cavell. But 'Becoming Visionary' is one thing above all others: it is a sustained and effective object lesson in a revolutionary way of 'reading' films philosophically. Indeed, unlike many philosophically inclined writers, who take cinema as simple fodder for analyses in which films instantiate philosophically weighted scenarios and provide merely anecdotal supplements to illustrate philosophical arguments, Peretz proposes and performs a difficult praxis that instead allows films to stage their own, unique way of philosophizing. Benefitting from Peretz's restrained and sensitive guidance, 'Becoming Visionary' shows how films can pose deeply philosophical questions through strategies and devices that, for all their 'filmic' artifice, throw open radically new perspectives on how meaning is constructed, on how we engage our senses - and not just the visual -, and on how we as subjects process representation, narrative, and experience itself. 'Becoming Visionary' is thus a welcome addition to Stanford's Cultural Memory in the Present series, and is a work that students, teachers, and those interested in disciplines from Literature to Cultural Studies to Media & Film alike would do well to read and heed.

How is one to think the significance of the art of film for philosophy? What would it mean to introduce film as a question into the heart of the philosophical enterprise? How would this transform our understanding of film, on the one hand, and of philosophy and the philosophical tradition, on the other? These are the questions that guide this project on the hitherto critically neglected but seminal film director Brian De Palma. Becoming Visionary: Brian De Palma's Cinematic Education of the Senses is located at the intersection of philosophy and film studies, and makes each of these disciplines productive and useful for each other in a new way. It is a concrete examination of the logic governing the work of a major American artist that is, at the same time, a general philosophical examination of the logic of meaning governing all the major filmic categories and is thus a comprehensive theory of film. Becoming Visionary develops a new matrix for thinking the relations between philosophy and film and, by extension, between philosophy and the arts

The Labyrinth: Memoirs Of Walter Schellenberg, Hitler's Chief Of Counterintelligence Review

The Labyrinth: Memoirs Of Walter Schellenberg, Hitler's Chief Of Counterintelligence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Walter Schellenberg is one of those enigmatic figures that emerged from the ruins of the Third Reich. Like the memiors of Hitler's armaments minister, Albert Speer, Schellenberg's account gives us a penetrating look into the inner workings of the Nazi regime. Unlike Speer's account however, Schellenberg sticks to his own field, intelligence, and completly ignores the larger, darker questions of the men he served so faithfully. That aside, 'The Labyrinth' is a remarkable glimpse into the world of German intelligence during World War Two. Schellenberg gives us the same kind of intimate portrait of Heinrich Himmler that Albert Speer gave of Adolf Hitler in 'Inside the Third Reich.' Schellenberg also gives us a memorable look at men like Reinhard Heydrich, Whilhelm Canaris, Heinrich Mueller, and Ernst Kaltenbrunner. But the heart of this work is Schellenberg's own experiences as head of foreign intelligence and counter intelligence. Included are Schellenberg's scheme to kidnap the Duke of Windsor in Portugal in 1940, his 'turning' of Russian POW's to the Nazi cause, and his capture of two British secret service officers on the Dutch-German border in 1939. The narrative ends with Schellenberg's attempts to secure the surrender of the western armies to the allies on behalf of Himmler. For anyone interested in the Nazi intelligence system of the Second World War or of true spy stories in general this is a work that will not disappoint. If you enjoyed this work you might want to check out Gerald Reitlinger's 'SS: Alibi of a nation, 1922-45,' for a larger picture of the German SS.

This unique account of Hitler's corrupt regime illuminates more vividly than any other the deepening atmosphere of terror and unreality in which the Nazi leadership lived as the war progressed. Schellenberg recounts with firsthand knowledge the motivations and machinations surrounding the Nazi Army's every move in Poland, Austria, and Russia. But this remarkable inside account is perhaps most memorable for its riveting portraits of Reinhard Heydrich, Heinrich Himmler, Heinrich Mueller, Ernst Kaltenbrunner—men whom Schellenberg calls, with stunning lack of irony, "Hitler's willing executioners."

Punishment and Democracy: Three Strikes and You're Out in California (Studies in Crime and Public Policy)
Average Reviews:

I'll be using this analysis for my Public Policy course. Zimring has done a great job, and is again bound to offend the simple & easily offended.

This book describes how one expecially and literally thoughtless program (3 strikes) was made into law, and how a more rational & legally coherent (10-20-life) competing policy was essentially ignored. Combining data, interviews, and relevent social research (i.e. mobilization theory, media effects, pressure groups, legislative lack of backbone by both Repubs & Dems) he shows how not to make public policy.

"Getting tough on crime" has been one of the favorite rallying cries of American politicians in the last two decades, and "getting tough" on repeat offenders has been particularly popular."Three strikes and you're out" laws, which effectively impose a 25-years-to-life sentence at the moment of a third felony conviction, have been passed in 26 states. California's version of the "three strikes" law, enacted in 1994, was broader and more severe than measures considered or passed in any other state. Punishment and Democracy is the first examination of the actual impact this law has had.Franklin Zimring, Sam Kamin, and Gordon Hawkins look at the origins of the law in California, compare it to other crackdown laws, and analyze the data collected on crime rates in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco in the year before and the two years after the law went into effect. They show that the "three strikes" law was a significant development in criminal justice policy making, not only at the state level, but also at the national level. They conclude with an examination of the trend toward populist initiatives driving penal policy. The importance of the subject and the stature of the authors make this book required reading for policy analysts, criminal justice scholars, elected officials, and indeed any American seeking to know more about "get-tough" criminal sentencing.

Pickets and Dead Men: Seasons on Rainier Review

Pickets and Dead Men: Seasons on Rainier

I started reading this book and it is a fast read. Chapter 1 is very interesting. There are lots of folks I would never want to meet. The authors climbing partner, Kim, the skier that takes the wands and ditches them, the authors boy friend that she says tried to kill her and I hate to say it I am not sure I would want to climb with the author. Chapter 1 reads like a how not to execute a winter climb and how not to pick a partner and how to ignore all the warning signs of an epic about to happen.
To me this book shows the real underbelly of climbing. The self centeredness that some climbers have and the attitude that the outdoors is just Disneyland with SAR teams.
The book is a real eye opener for anyone who has never climbed in this environment. The writing is OK but a bit bleak and negative. And the author seems to draw some of this negativity in people to her. This can make the book a bit uncomfortable to read.
The climbers themselves are a selfish lot and the tourists in the book range from selfish to suicidal. There are times in this book where you will have to wonder if Bree sometimes sets herself up for failure. If by nothing else never saying no. In the end I think the book reveals she is a good person. And that as climbers sometimes we need to look inwards and outwards. Inwards to our challenges and goals and outwards to insure we do not leave a wake of carnage in our paths.
So I give it a solid 3 might warrant a 4 but certainly not a 5.
Tag line should be "Mamas don't let your kids grow up to be climbers......"

A funny and sometimes cringe-inducing story of a young woman's experience as a climbing ranger where respect is hard won and on-the-job performance can be the difference between life and death.Being a climbing ranger on Mount Rainier proved to be a life-altering experience for Bree Loewen. As one of only a handful of women on staff, Bree fought to prove herself among men in the field, while confronting the often unrealistic expectations of the public on a mountain that shows little mercy. With honesty, self-deprecation, and wry humor, she reflects on her experiences on Rainier: assisting injured climbers, rescuing lost children, battling inscrutable bureaucracy, lugging heavy equipment, and trying to make sense of it all. Whether it's her account of a solo climb in dicey conditions or trying to protect her good jacket while cleaning the outhouses at Camp Muir, Loewen's writing is engagingly human and humane.

I started reading "Over the Edge" the Saturday of Labor day weekend thinking that I would read it around the weekend activities and ended up not being able to put it down to the detriment of some activities. Bane draws you in and you become as obsessed with the LIST as he was.
From cave diving to climbing Mt Mckinley Bane weaves an autobiography that only someone that is partly crazy could write. But the more that I read the more I started to reevaluate my life. At 51 I am no longer young enough to punish my body like he did but he has motivated me to make my own list of things that I have wanted to do in the past and always found an excuse not to do.
Banes' book shows you that your only limited by your own limitations and that risk is relative to reward.
"Over the Edge" gives desk jockeys like myself a new insight into the meaning of Risk. After reading Banes' book you will look at risk with a whole new perspective.
A cross between story and philosophy "Over the Edge" should be read by anyone that wants to make a profound change in their life, be it loosing weight or starting the next billion dollar dotcom company.

Dave not only provides a simple approach to a complex subject, he focuses on the critical hazard recognition necessary to eliminate (by design) or control those hazards. Construction Safety Planning David V. MacCollum Construction Safety Planning is a comprehensive, practical, step-by-step guide for those who design and oversee large and small projects. Designed to facilitate compliance with new OSHA objectives, it presents, for those who are responsible for construction safety, what questions to ask in order to avoid conditions that invite injury or death on site. The book shows how to integrate safety planning into existing design and construction scheduling in order to avoid duplicating paperwork that is normally associated with safety planning. Advice is given on how to involve all supervisory personnel as hazard hunters, so that timely prevention measures can be taken. Author David V. MacCollum is a forty-five-year veteran safety engineer who participated in the development of safety planning concepts used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on big dam projects in the Pacific Northwest during the 1950s. In this clearly written reference he highlights the concepts and practices that reduced construction deaths by 75 percent and are today still enabling the Corps of Engineers to enjoy the same reduction nationwide, when compared to similar work not under its supervision--the end result being savings of several billion dollars each year. The risk of death on the job for construction workers is five times greater than that of the average American worker. A new OSHA era will change that. With this book, everyone working in the field of construction--from design to maintenance--will have the tools and knowledge to make a difference.

Josephson is regarded as one of the semi-classic EP textbooks, but on the evidence of this edition, this may not be justified. The text is verbose, turgid and hard to read, and the numerous electrograms are poorly reproduced, making them hard to read and interpret. In retrospect, I'm not sure that this book was worth purchasing. The publishers need to clean up the text and improve the quality of the electrograms to make this a worthwhile purchase.

Fully revised and updated for its Fourth Edition, Dr. Josephson's classic text provides a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and the therapeutic interventions used to treat arrhythmias. The book details the electrophysiologic methodology required to define the mechanism and site of origin of arrhythmias so that safe and effective therapy can be chosen. Close attention is given to the mechanisms, clinical implications, and limitations of current therapeutic interventions, including drugs, implantable devices, and catheter and surgical ablation.
More than 1,100 illustrations clarify the concepts and techniques presented in the text. This edition has a new full-color design.

I'm a Protection Ranger at Sleeping Bear Dune's National Lakeshore, so when I saw this book I just had to have it. After reading it, I'm extremely glad I bought it! He nailed the job description of the Protection Ranger! (as much as anyone could) The truth is we don't know what we will be doing exactly from day to day, and this book shows that.
I love this book as a Ranger, but this book isn't written just for Rangers! It reads like an adventure that most would enjoy. It is motivational, sincere, funny, and gives the public a great idea of what we really do out there. It also features Vera Figner's account of her unsuccessful (and finally successful) attempts to assassinate Tsar Alexander II. The sacrifices of these women include shedding aristocratic lifestyles for back breaking labor in noblemen's fields so they could teach peasants how to read and spread propaganda for their cause. Some of their comrades actually went insane in the process. You will read about their experiences as exiles in Siberia, and one of the greatest escapes Hollywood never saw. Whether you consider yourself a history buff, or just appreciate great stories, you will love this book.

An account of the Russian revolutionary movement of the 1870s, from the translated memoirs of five young women who participated: "Vera Figner", whose account of her evolution from liberal to radical is timeless; "Vera Zasulich", who tried to assassinate the governor of St Petersburg, setting off the terrorist phase of the movement; "Olga Liubatovich", who provides an account of daily life in the movement and its personal consequences; "Praskovia Ivanovskaia", who escaped from a Siberian prison to work with the Socialist Revolutionary Party; and "Elizaveta Kovalskaia", one of the few revolutionaries of peasant background, a pioneering organizer in the South of Russia.

Thomas Paine: Apostle of Freedom Review

Thomas Paine: Apostle of Freedom

Thomas Paine is one of the great unsung heroes of early American history. He didn't come from an affluent family, he never held high public office, and he never had any money. There are no monuments in Washington D.C. or Philadelphia dedicated to Mr. Paine, he's not on any currency and he's affectively been eclipsed by many other revolutionary heroes- that are quite frankly his inferiors. Thomas Paine has been shortchanged in history because he was a drunk, an atheist and an all around unpleasant person (well...if he didn't like you, anyway).
Despite his shortcomings, and the numerous attacks that have come from his critics, Tom Paine was the conscience of the American revolution. He wrote several pamphlets and articles that called the American populous to action and galvanized revolutionary thought, not only during America's fight for independence, but also for the French who were about to engage in their own revolution.
Jack Fruchman has done a fine job of giving us Mr. Paine with all his imperfections and accomplishments. I recommend that every serious student of American history read this biography of one of our great patriots, thinkers and writers. I just admonish you not to forget to read the words of Thomas Paine himself. His thinking is as important and relevent today as it was 225 years ago.
